Linear, quadratic and polynomial functions

The problems follow the sections of the theory. Those that are checked instantly get new numbers every time you press New variant: repeat them until the method runs by itself. Those with a solution are for pen and paper. Write out your whole argument before you open the solution, then compare line by line. Last come problems in the form of the exam, with points and a marking scheme.

(a) A shop notes the price $P$ of a good and the number $D$ of units sold on five days:

dayMonTueWedThuFri
$P$$8$$10$$12$$10$$9$
$D$$70$$55$$40$$61$$64$

Do these five pairs $(P, D)$ lie on the graph of a function of $P$? Explain with Definition 1.1.

(b) Is the set of points $(x, y)$ with $y^2 = x$ the graph of a function of $x$?

(c) Can the same set be described by a function if the roles are exchanged, so that $x$ is given by $y$?

Hint

“Exactly one” is the word to test. Look for one input with two different outputs.

Problem 6●○○ BasicSolution included

A taxi firm charges a fixed fee plus the same amount for every kilometre. A ride of $5$ km costs $95$ kronor and a ride of $10$ km costs $155$ kronor.

(a) Find the cost $C$ of a ride as a function of the distance $x$ in kilometres.

(b) What do the slope and the intercept mean, and what are their units?

(c) A second firm charges $15$ kronor per kilometre and no fixed fee. For which distances is the second firm cheaper?

Hint

“The same amount for every kilometre” says that $C$ is linear. Two rides are two points on the line.

Problem 11●●○ IntermediateSolution included

Let $f(x) = 3x^2 - 12x + 7.$

(a) Complete the square by hand, without using formula (1.4), and write $f$ in the form $a(x - h)^2 + k.$

(b) Explain from your answer, in one or two sentences, why $f(x) \ge -5$ for every $x,$ and for which $x$ there is equality.

(c) For which values of the constant $c$ does $3x^2 - 12x + c$ have no roots at all?

Hint

Take the factor $3$ out of the first two terms, then add and subtract the square of half the coefficient of $x$ inside the bracket.

Problem 13●●○ IntermediateSolution included

A cinema sells $300$ tickets a night at the price $100$ kronor. Experience says that every increase of the price by $5$ kronor loses $10$ customers, and every decrease by $5$ kronor gains $10.$ The hall has $400$ seats.

(a) Write the number $q$ of tickets sold as a linear function of the price $p.$

(b) Which price gives the largest revenue, and how large is it?

(c) Is your answer allowed by the problem? Name the constraints and check them.

Hint

The revenue is price times quantity. With $q$ linear in $p$ it becomes a quadratic in $p.$

Problem 14●●● ChallengeSolution included

A monopolist sells $Q$ units at the price $P = 60 - Q$ per unit, and its cost is $C = 12Q + Q^2.$ The government levies a tax of $\tau$ per unit produced, with $0 \le \tau \le 48.$

(a) Find the profit-maximising output $Q^{*}(\tau).$

(b) The government collects $T = \tau\,Q^{*}(\tau).$ Which tax $\tau$ gives the largest tax revenue, and how large is it?

(c) How much does the firm produce at that tax, compared with no tax at all? What happens at $\tau = 48$?

Hint

The tax adds $\tau Q$ to the cost. In (b) the variable is $\tau,$ not $Q$: the tax revenue is a quadratic in $\tau.$

Problem 17●●○ IntermediateSolution included

Find all roots of $$x^3 - \tfrac12 x^2 - 4x + 2 = 0\,.$$ Say at each step which Fact or Method you use, and explain why you have found all the roots.

Hint

Start with step 1 of Method 1.19. When the integer candidates have given what they can, divide the factors out and look at what is left.

Problem 19●●○ IntermediateSolution included

Let $$R(x) = \frac{2x^3 + x^2 - 5}{x^2 - 1}\,.$$

(a) Is $R$ proper or improper? For which $x$ is it defined?

(b) Write $R$ as a polynomial plus a proper rational function, and check your division by multiplying back.

(c) Compute both parts at $x = 10.$ Which part carries nearly all of the value $R(10)$?

Hint

The numerator has no term in $x$: write $0x$ in its place, so that like terms stay in line.

Problem 20●●● ChallengeSolution included

Let $P(x) = x^3 + kx^2 - 4x + 4,$ where $k$ is a constant.

(a) Find $k$ so that $x - 2$ is a factor of $P(x).$

(b) For that $k,$ find all roots of $P$ and write $P$ as a product of three factors.

(c) For which $x$ is $P(x) > 0$? Use a table of the signs of the three factors.

Hint

For (a), the factor theorem turns “is a factor” into one equation for $k.$ For (c), a product is positive when an even number of its factors are negative.

Problem 21●●● ChallengeSolution included

For a constant $m,$ consider the line $y = mx - 4$ and the parabola $y = x^2.$

(a) For which values of $m$ do the line and the parabola have two common points, exactly one, or none?

(b) For $m = 5,$ find the common points.

(c) A classmate says: “A line and a parabola can meet in three points if the line is steep enough.” Explain why this is impossible.

Hint

A common point has the same $y$ on both curves. That gives one quadratic equation for $x,$ and its discriminant counts the solutions.
